Rome is a city that reveals itself step by step: scenic squares, ancient ruins, winding alleys full of history, and breathtaking views. In this section, we offer maps and guided itineraries to help you enjoy the Eternal City at its best — on foot.
We’ve designed two main routes, ideal for a first exploration of the historic center, starting from the metro and featuring well-paced stops that blend art, architecture, and fascinating curiosities.
Itinerary 1: From the Tridente to the Colosseum
Metro Line A – Flaminio Station
- Piazza del Popolo As soon as you exit the metro, you’ll find yourself in one of Rome’s most scenic squares. We recommend visiting the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo, home to works by Caravaggio and Pinturicchio. Alternatively, step into one of the two twin churches: Santa Maria in Montesanto or Santa Maria dei Miracoli.
- The Tridente and Piazza di Spagna Three main streets, known as the “Tridente,” branch out from Piazza del Popolo. Take Via del Babuino, which leads you to Piazza di Spagna, where you can admire the famous Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) and Bernini’s Fontana della Barcaccia.
- Via dei Condotti and Via del Corso Continue along Via dei Condotti for a stroll among luxury boutiques. At the intersection with Via del Corso, turn left to reach Piazza del Parlamento, home to the Palazzo di Montecitorio, seat of the Italian Parliament.
- Galleria Colonna and Trevi Fountain Head back onto Via del Corso and stop at Galleria Colonna for a break among shops, cafés, and restaurants. Then take Via delle Muratte to arrive at the breathtaking Trevi Fountain.
- Toward Piazza Venezia Continue along Via Minghetti, then toward Piazza Santi Apostoli. Cross Via Quattro Novembre and take Via dei Fornari to reach Piazza Venezia, dominated by the majestic Altar of the Fatherland (Altare della Patria). Here you’ll also find the Museum of the Italian Unification.
- Imperial Forums and the Colosseum Leaving the museum, you’ll find yourself on Via dei Fori Imperiali. Stroll among the ancient ruins of the Roman Forum and conclude your itinerary in front of the iconic Colosseum.
Itinerary 2: From St. Peter’s to Piazza Navona and Beyond
Starting Point: Metro A – Ottaviano Station
- St. Peter’s Basilica and Castel Sant’Angelo
Just a short walk from the metro stop, you’ll find the majestic St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums. From St. Peter’s Square, walk down Via della Conciliazione to reach Castel Sant’Angelo. Then cross the scenic Ponte Sant’Angelo bridge. - Via dei Coronari and Piazza Navona
Take Via Panico, then turn left onto Via dei Coronari, a charming street filled with antique shops and artisan boutiques. It leads you to Piazza Navona, where you can admire Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers and Borromini’s Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone. - Corso Rinascimento and Piazza Sant’Andrea della Valle
Continue along Corso Rinascimento to reach Piazza Sant’Andrea della Valle, home to the church of the same name, featuring frescoes by Domenichino. - Sant’Eustachio Caffè and Largo di Torre Argentina
Cross Via Sant’Eustachio and the square of the same name for a break at the famous Sant’Eustachio Caffè. Finally, wander through the maze of picturesque alleyways until you arrive at Largo di Torre Argentina, well connected by various bus lines to continue your visit.
